Nelise Charles Bey is a textile designer, artist, living and creating in Brooklyn, NY. Born in Saint George’s, Grenada, raised in Flatbush her work seeks to bring attention to the beauty and complexity of the natural world through the juxtaposition of patterns in fabric, dyes and silkscreen. Using a variety of natural fibers, generally silk, linen and cotton, she creates intricate prints that conjure traditional motifs and evoke the vibrancy of nature. Her pieces are experimental in nature and embrace roots, petals, leaves and even some insects as symbols of the delicate yet powerful interconnectivity found in the environment. Through her work, Nelise aims to challenge traditional art historical narrative and provoke questions concerning the relationship between people and nature. Her vibrant work speaks to the importance of utilizing colors and textures to communicate stories that are too often untold.
